Karnataka now has 35 points, while Jharkhand has 23 points. Rajasthan (20 points), Kerala (20) and Goa (18) also have a chance to make it to the last-eight from the group.

Karnataka on Thursday consolidated their position at the top of Group C of the Ranji Trophy with a nine-wicket win over Jharkhand at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur.

The Mayank Agarwal-led side had made it to the quarterfinal stage after the previous round of Ranji matches. But after the six points they earned from the rubber on Thursday, they have put a major hurdle in Jharkhand’s way of securing a last-eight berth.

Karnataka now has 35 points, while Jharkhand has 23 points. Rajasthan (20 points), Kerala (20) and Goa (18) also have a chance to make it to the last eight from the group.

Karnataka, which had bowled out Jharkhand for 164 in the first innings and then scored 300 to take a 136-run lead, came back in the second innings with their veteran off-spinner Krishnappa Gautam taking another five-wicket haul.

The hosts were bowled out for 201 in their second essay, leaving Karnataka with a modest target of 66 runs to chase.

Karnataka won in the 19th over of their innings with the help of Nikin Jose (42 not out) and Ravikumar Samarth (24 not out).

Much of Karnataka’s bowling revolves around the 34-year-old Gautam. He broke partnerships at crucial junctures to ensure Jharkhand batsmen did not score big.

Gautam first dismissed opener Kumar Devvrat, who was caught by Agarwal. The off-spinner then returned to remove the No. 3 and No. 4 batsmen – Kumar Suraj (34) and Kumar Kushagra (36) – who had begun to consolidate their partnership.

But with Jharkhand being bundled out for 201 in 78.5 overs, it was a matter of time before Karnataka’s work was out.

While Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed for a duck in the first over, Ravikumar Samarth and Nikin Jose ensured no further hiccups as Karnataka earned six more points to take their tally to 35 points.
