Attacking the BJP government on the misuse of central investigative agencies ahead of the Rajasthan Rajya Sabha elections, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala on Thursday got embroiled in a fresh controversy when he mistakenly referred to the “chir-haran” (tampering) of Goddess Sita.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, Surjewala can be heard saying that the BJP is “relying” on central agencies – ED, CBI and Income Tax – to contest elections here and has lost the last Rajya Sabha election. Truth, democracy, law and morality will prevail. Covering a sheet of lies (BJP)… like the cheers of Goddess Sita, they want to destroy democracy. They (Rajya Sabha elections) will be defeated and their masks will fall off.
The BJP condemned the remark and said that the Congress was denying the existence of Lord Ram.

BJP spokesperson Shahzad Jai Hind said in a tweet, “Even as a Muslim I know that the chir haran was not of Mother Sita but of Draupadi! But then Congress denied the existence of Shri Ram! You can wear Janeu on coat.” But what is inside you will always come out.
Elections will be held for four Rajya Sabha seats in Rajasthan on Friday, in which the ruling Congress is in a position to win two and the opposition BJP one. The Congress currently has 108 MLAs in the 200-member state assembly and needs 123 votes to win three seats. The Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) with two MLAs has extended support to the ruling party.
Fearing horse-trading, the Congress shifted its MLAs and some independents to a resort in Udaipur on June 2. He is expected to return to Jaipur on Thursday, a day before the polls.
