This year, Ramadan is expected to begin on April 2 and end on May 1. Apart from this, it is also indicating the coming of the auspicious Eid-ul-Fitr festival. Muslims may decide to prepare for the pilgrimage to Mecca this month as Umrah is encouraged throughout Ramadan.

Importance of Ramadan for Muslims

Ramadan is a time of devotion, fasting, giving of charity and self-accountability. It is also the month of forgiveness, where every Muslim becomes closer to God. According to Muslims, the angel Gabriel descended from heaven to reveal the Qur’an, God’s message to the holy prophet Muhammad, marked by a fast of 29–30 days. Celebrating this festival is a way to honor Muhammad and develop greater self-control.

During this period, Muslims follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Like fasting, this ritual is obligatory for all adult Muslims unless they are ill, traveling, having menstrual cycles, pregnant, diabetic, or elderly.

People consume Sehri in the morning before sunrise. After this they attend the morning prayer Fajr. After that they fast for the whole day without eating or drinking anything till the evening. Later in the evening, they traditionally gather at Iftar to break their fast with dates and go for Maghrib, the evening prayer.

Additionally, during the last ten days of the month, many prefer the event of the 27th night to be known as ‘Lailat ul Qadr’ or ‘Night of Luck’.
