Ralph Rangnick plays down talk of unrest at Manchester United

Manchester United interim manager Ralph Rangnick has dismissed reports of dressing room dissatisfaction at Old Trafford, saying turbulence is inevitable with a deep-seated team.

The German has suggested that the team he inherited is too large, with many players unhappy with his lack of playing time.

United suffered a demoralizing 1-0 home defeat to Wolves on Monday, which could prove costly in their bid to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

Mirror newspaper reported on Thursday that 17 players wanted to leave the club, which are 22 points behind leaders Manchester City.

“If you have that many players and 10 outfield players can play and three are being replaced, then of course you have a lot of players – in our case 12, 13, 14 players who don’t even play, Or there are no squads,” Rangnik said on Friday.

“Then those players are not happy with that situation. It is clear, it is clear.

“Overall, we have a great team. I explain to the players every two or three weeks why they are not playing but obviously I can’t do that in every game and it affects our team as well as others. There is an issue in clubs as well.”

Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani are the two high-profile stars to be out of contract at the end of the season.

Anthony Martial is set to leave in January, with Sevilla reportedly close to agreeing a loan deal for the France international.

Dean Henderson, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Donny van de Beek could also go on to look for more first-team action.

“We have players expiring in the summer,” Rangnik said. “We also probably have one or two players who still want to leave, although they are under contract.

“It is about players dealing with them in a professional manner. Everyone has the opportunity and option to show up in training, show up and then get a chance to play.

“If it is not, of course with the player, the club and the agents, they need to discuss the situation.”

Monday’s FA Cup third-round clash with Aston Villa could have been an opportunity for Rangnik to use some of his fringe players.

But the German is under pressure not to drop out of the competition at the first hurdle after suffering the first defeat of his short reign against Wolves.
