Rajiv Gandhi death anniversary: United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid floral tributes to late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 32nd death anniversary at Veer Bhoomi here on Sunday morning. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was also present along with the Gandhi family and paid tributes.

About Rajiv Gandhi

Born on 20 August 1944, Rajiv Gandhi represented the Amethi parliamentary constituency of Uttar Pradesh four times. A recipient of the Bharat Ratna, Rajiv Gandhi served as the sixth Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989. He assumed office in 1984 following the assassination of his mother, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber during an election rally at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu on May 21, 1991. He was cremated at Veer Bhoomi, situated on the banks of the Yamuna River.

Anti-terrorism Day

Every year on 21 May, India observes National Anti-Terrorism Day to commemorate the death of the former Prime Minister. He was the youngest Prime Minister of India who came to power at the age of 40.

In 1991, he was assassinated in a suicide bombing by a woman belonging to the Liberation of Tamil Tigers Eelam (LTTE) terrorist army while he was campaigning for his political party, the Congress, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. After the assassination of his mother Indira Gandhi in 1984, Rajiv Gandhi became the youngest Prime Minister of India. He served as the Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989.
