International Women’s Day is just around the corner and for us in India, the celebration is double as March 8 this year coincides with one of the country’s biggest festivals, Holi. In a world full of sexism and gender discrimination, it is almost impossible to make up for it in a day, but women in Rajasthan have got a gift. Around 3.5 crore women population in the state can travel free of cost in buses on March 8.

They will not have to pay a single penny for the ticket. This exemption will be applicable on buses operated by Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation. As per the instructions of the Road Administration, regular and express buses of Rajasthan Roadways will be free for women in the entire state.

The free travel facility will be available from the midnight of March 7 and till 11:59 pm of March 8 on generated tickets. The benefit of free travel facility will be available only within the state of Rajasthan. If a woman goes from Rajasthan to Delhi, Agra, Mathura or cities of other states, then she will not have to pay the fare up to the state limits. Beyond that the fare will be charged from the woman. The move will put an additional annual financial burden of about Rs 3.50 crore on the state government. It is expected that there will be more crowd in the buses on 8th March.

This is because the Dhulandi festival is on March 7 and many people will travel from their homes to work in other cities the next day. Due to this, there will be more crowd of passengers on March 8 as compared to other days. According to the roadways administration, around 8 lakh women are expected to travel across the state.

Ashok Gehlot’s Rajasthan administration had said in its budget that women would get a 50% discount on the cost of regular highway buses. The government has now announced that women will start getting the benefit of this exemption from April 1. According to information received from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), from April 1, women will have to pay only for base tickets in buses.
