Rajasthan: Curfew extended till April 7 in violence-hit Karauli

In view of the law and order situation in violence-hit Rajasthan’s Karauli, the curfew was extended on Monday till April 7. The district administration also arranged for Class 10 and 12 examinations, allowing students to reach their examination centers after showing their admit cards, officials said, two days after communal clashes broke out in the city.

“Since the present circumstances are not normal for a law and order situation. In such a situation, the curfew is extended till midnight of April 7 due to the law and order situation, the officials said.

ASP Kishor Butolia said that 13 people arrested were produced in the court from where they were sent on police remand for two days. “Two hours relaxation was given in curfew on Monday for purchase of essential commodities. Central and Rajasthan government offices and courts remained open and employees could reach their offices by showing identity cards.

There was no report of any untoward incident, but mobile internet services were suspended in Karauli, he said. Curfew was imposed on Saturday following incidents of arson and vandalism in the wake of stone-pelting at a bike rally on Nav Samvatsar (Hindu New Year) passing through a Muslim-dominated area.

Right-wing organizations including Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bajrang Dal took out the rally, police said. He said that around 35 people were injured in the violence.

Bharatpur Range Inspector General of Police Prashan Kumar Khamesra said that following the communal violence, the police arrested 46 people and detained seven others for questioning. A case has been registered against 13 accused for violating the curfew order and 33 others have been arrested, he said, adding that 21 vehicles have also been seized.

He said police patrolling teams were closely monitoring the situation and it was under control but curfew was continued as a precautionary measure. Khamesra said that a flag march was also conducted in the town.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday congratulated constable Netresh Sharma (31) of Karauli Kotwali police station for saving four people from a burning house. Gehlot praised his work and announced that he would be promoted to head constable.

In a phone conversation with Sharma, the Chief Minister said, ‘The way you have worked by risking your life, it is commendable. And you deserve to be congratulated for showing great courage.” It has been decided to promote Netresh to the post of head constable, he said. During the riots and arson in Karauli on Saturday, houses and shops were set on fire. Three women and a child were trapped in a house. He had lost hope of surviving the arson but Sharma helped him out safely.
