Heavy rains in Kerala have claimed over 35 lives so far

The death toll due to devastating landslides and flash floods in Kerala’s south-central districts has risen to 38, as the Navy and NDRF recover more bodies from the mud and debris. According to the data shared by the state government, the death toll includes all rain-related incidents since October 12.

This includes 13 people killed in landslide-hit Kootkal in Kottayam district, whose bodies have already been recovered and 11 people killed in various rain-related incidents in Idukki district, officials said.

Idukki district officials said the Navy, NDRF, firefighters and others are engaged in rescue operations in Kokkayar and other areas of the district, which were ravaged by several landslides on October 16, where one more person is reported to be missing. is going somewhere.

Two more bodies were recovered from the district today, taking the death toll there to 11, he said.

On October 16, rescue teams had recovered the bodies of a man and a woman in a car that was washed away in flood waters in Kanjar area of ​​Idukki district.

Idukki District Collector Sheeba George said, “So far we have found the bodies of 11 people. One person is still missing. The search will continue for the Navy and NDRF.”

Meanwhile, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) said 38 people died between October 12 and 18 in various rain-related incidents across Kerala.

An SDMA official said, “38 people have lost their lives since October 12. This includes 13 people from Kottikal in Kottayam and 11 from Idukki in landslides.”

Three people from Malappuram, two each from Alappuzha, Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur, one each from Kollam, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur and Palakkad lost their lives in various rain-related incidents in Kerala.

According to the SDMA report, at least 90 houses have been destroyed in the rains since October 12, while 702 houses have been partially damaged.
