Rain, thunderstorm likely to occur in Delhi-NCR on Sunday

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday that the southwest monsoon is expected to reach the national capital in the next 24 hours.

Predicting rain or thundershowers once or twice on Sunday, the IMD said the easterly winds have made conditions favorable for the progress of the southwest monsoon.

The Meteorological Department said that Southwest Monsoon is likely to cover parts of North India including Delhi, Haryana and Punjab in a day.

“Therefore, conditions remain favorable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh and some more parts of Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan during next 24 hours,” the IMD said.

Delhi’s maximum and minimum temperatures on Saturday were recorded at 39.8 degrees Celsius, four notches above normal and 28.6 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal.

The IMD had earlier predicted on Friday that the monsoon would reach Delhi on Saturday.

This will be the most delayed monsoon in the national capital in the last 15 years as it was earlier estimated that it would reach Delhi on June 27.

Kuldeep Srivastava, head of IMD’s Regional Forecasting Centre, said the monsoon had reached Delhi on July 7 in 2012 and July 9 in 2006.
