Rain starts in Kolkata due to Twin Cyclonic Circulation. Kolkata News – Times of India

Kolkata: The city remained overcast and a steady drizzle, which often intensified into moderate rain under the influence of two cyclonic winds – one over the Bay of Bengal and the other over south Bangladesh. Several areas of Kolkata received rain, leading to waterlogging, while the Met Office predicted more frequent, ‘moderate’ rains in the city on Sunday. While Kolkata received 20 mm of rain till 5.30 pm on Saturday, Dum Dum received 12 mm and Salt Lake received 52 mm of rain.
The meteorological department said the city is likely to receive around 50 mm-60 mm of rain between Saturday and Sunday.

While a cyclonic circulation over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal has started raining from Friday, another one formed over south Bangladesh on Saturday producing rain clouds that will float over Gangetic Bengal on Saturday. Gaya. While the former extends between 1.5 km to 5.8 km above sea level, the latter is present at an altitude of 900 m. However, the circulation over the Gulf is moving towards Odisha and is very likely to move towards the coast of the neighboring state on Saturday evening.
However, the circulation over Bangladesh will continue to provide clouds that may lead to rain over Gangetic Bengal. “We expect light to moderate rain in Kolkata and its neighboring districts on Sunday. But there may be a heavy rain in them late Saturday night or early Sunday,” said Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) director GK Das.
On Saturday, isolated rain lashed some areas of the city, leading to waterlogging in some parts. As per the rainfall recorded by KMC drainage pumping stations, some North Kolkata areas like Ultadanga, Beliaghata, Belgachia, Thanthania received more rainfall than South Kolkata areas like Jodhpur Park, Kalighat, Mominpur, Behala or Tollygunge. By afternoon, the water receded from most parts except some parts of North Kolkata. Waterlogging was negligible in most of South Kolkata.
After nearly an hour of heavy rain in the city, Salt Lake and some areas of New Town were inundated, but within a few hours after the rain stopped, the water receded in most places. New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) and Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials operated all their pumps to flush out the excess water at the earliest.
While parts of Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore, North and South 24 Parganas received heavy rains on Saturday, another heavy rain alert has been issued for all South Bengal districts on Sunday.
A weather bulletin issued by the RMC on Saturday said that the likely effects of the rains could be rise in the water level of rivers, waterlogging in low-lying areas and damage to crops.
