This was in response to a letter sent by the MP in November to fix the faulty Doppler Weather Radar 15 and install a new radar near the Chennai port.
The MP had said that accurate forecasting is of paramount importance as there are drastic changes in climatic conditions including rainfall, and the public should be careful on timely preparedness.
“Radar is not the only input for weather forecasting as data from observatories, automated weather stations and satellites also provide necessary inputs to supercomputers to generate weather forecasts using numerical weather forecasting models. Hence weather forecast in Tamil Nadu. The quality is not being compromised,” the minister said in his reply.
Jitendra Singh, who is also the Minister of State for the Department of Space and Atomic Energy, said that the IMD, which is under his Ministry of Earth Sciences, is using the radar capabilities at Sriharikota, about 100 km from Chennai, and is monitoring it. Around 500 km range.
Besides, the radar at Karaikal was being operated for weather forecasting of northeast monsoon and tropical cyclones, the minister said. He said the new radar was also being used in Chennai and provided valuable assistance to the IMD during the heavy rains in November. Further testing activities are being carried out by ISRO, he added.
He said that ISRO is also providing technical assistance in replacement of defective parts in the S-band radar in Chennai.
Pointing to the above reply from the minister that he had received two weeks ago, Venkatesan on Saturday said it contradicts the statement of IMD Chennai officials that they have the technology to predict such rains. The MP said, ‘The minister should pay attention to this.
