Raigad landslide: 44 bodies recovered, 35 injured treated, 6 places affected

Raigarh: District Collector Nidhi Choudhary said on Thursday that a total of 44 bodies have been recovered so far from two places in Tilaye village of Raigad, Maharashtra after landslides caused by excessive rains.

35 injured are undergoing treatment. He said that landslides took place at six places in Raigad district.

Rescue work is still going on at one place. According to officials and staff present at the spot, around 50 more people are feared trapped under the debris.

Earlier, Maharashtra Urban Development and PWD Minister Eknath Shinde had said that 80 to 85 people were missing, out of which 33 bodies have been recovered, many of them buried under the rubble. He also said that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are carrying out rescue operations along with local agencies.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of those who lost their lives in landslides triggered by torrential rains in different parts of the state.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the state will also bear the cost of treatment of the injured.

The CMO wrote in a tweet, “CM Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray has announced Rs 5 lakh each for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the landslide caused by torrential rains. The state will also bear the cost of treatment of the injured.”

At least 36 people were reported to have lost their lives in landslides triggered by incessant rains in Raigad district of the state and said rescue operations were on.

After taking stock of the situation, Uddhav Thackeray told reporters, “Around 35 people have lost their lives due to landslides in Talai village, Raigad. Rescue operations are on at many places. I have tried to evacuate and relocate the people living there.” Areas where there is a possibility of landslides.”

“NDRF and other rescue teams are finding it difficult to reach the flood-affected areas in Chiplun as roads and bridges are damaged. The situation remains tense,” the chief minister said.

Incessant rains for the last few days have caused huge destruction in many areas of Maharashtra. The Chief Minister was apprised of the flood situation in Mahad by Raigad District Collector. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased.
