BENGALURU: More than a decade after greenfield airports were proposed shivamoga, Vijayapura, Hasan And Raichur With an aim to increase investment opportunities in Tier-II cities, projects are getting closer to reality.
After starting Kalaburagi and Bidar airports in the last two years after much delays due to land acquisition issues and AAI clearances, the state is likely to see four greenfield airports – a term used for a new airport – take off. And ready to land in the next three to four years, government sources say.
While about 45 per cent work of Shivamogga airport has been completed, the land acquisition process for Hassan and Raichur has been completed. At Shivamogga Airport, runway work is partially completed, and that is in progress on access roads, parking areas, internal and peripheral roads, compound wall, passenger terminal building, watch tower and CFR buildings.
Out of the estimated project cost of Rs 384 crore, work costing Rs 125 crore has been completed.
The land acquisition work for Hassan and Raichur airports has been completed, but the work may take some time to start. The contract for Hassan Airport has been finalized and work is on to set up the site office. DPR has been submitted in Raichur and tender process is going to start soon.
However, little progress has been made at Vijayapura airport. As per the status report, only earthworks have been completed for most of the essential requirements for the construction of the airport. Out of the estimated cost of Rs 220 crore, only Rs 49 crore has been completed.
In all, the government is spending Rs 954 crore on all the four airports. Of these, Shivamogga will be a full-fledged airport with landing capacity for Boeing A320 or 737, while the other three airports will be equipped to handle ATR 72 or equivalent aircraft.
