New Delhi: First time BJP MLA Rahul Narvekar has been elected as the new Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Sunday (July 3, 2022). Narvekar, who secured 164 votes during the special two-day session of the assembly that began at 11 am on Sunday, defeated Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena candidate Rajan Salvi, who could garner only 107 votes. Amidst the slogans of “Jai Bhavani, Jai Shivaji” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai”, Narvekar took over as the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

The post of the President was vacant since February last year after the resignation of Nana Patole of the Congress.
The development comes a day before the four-day-old Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena-BJP government faces a floor test on July 4.
