Rahul Dravid may apply again as BCCI invites applications for NCA chief post

BCCI has invited applications for the job for the Head Cricket The role currently played by former India captain Rahul Dravid, at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

Dravid, who was instrumental in building India’s rich bench strength, was appointed the head of cricket in July 2019 after working extensively with junior players as an India U-19 and A coach.

His two-year contract has expired and as per protocol, the BCCI has invited applications. Dravid is likely to reapply for a two-year extension. The last date to apply is August 15 (up to 11.59 PM).

“Rahul Dravid could have applied for the post again, but with Ravi Shastri’s tenure ending in November 2021 after the T20 World Cup, there is every possibility of Rahul getting promoted to the position of head coach. Bottom line, he is very much part of the system,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Dravid had recently visited Sri Lanka as the head coach of India’s limited overs team with the Test team in England at the same time.

After the conclusion of six matches in Sri Lanka, he was asked if he wanted to be India’s head coach for a long time, but he remained non-committal on the high-profile topic.

“I haven’t really thought anything too far ahead, to be honest. I’m enjoying doing what I’m doing.”

The current age limit set for a head coach is 60, like the NCA lead role, and Shastri turned 59 in May. If India doesn’t do well in the T20 World Cup then Dravid could come into the picture.

India are yet to win a major competition under the partnership of Kohli and Shastri but have done well as a Test team, with their two series wins in Australia.

“The Head Cricket NCA will be overall responsible for running all cricket coaching programs at the NCA. He will be responsible for the preparation, development and performance of all cricketers participating in the training at the Academy.”

“He will be single-handedly responsible for the development of budding and young cricketers within the men and women player development programs sent to the NCA.

It added, “The remit may include, but is not limited to, India A sides, under 23, under 19, under 16 team players as well as state association players who train at the NCA and NCA Let’s upgrade my skills,” it added.
