Rabindra Jayanti Bank Holiday: Banks to Remain Closed in This State Today; Details

Bank Holiday on 9th May: Public and private sector banks in West Bengal will remain closed on Tuesday, May 9, on account of Rabindra Jayanti. The day marks the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the famous Bengali poet, novelist, dramatist, scholar, humanist, philosopher and Nobel laureate. People living in areas falling under Kolkata circle may note that normal bank operations will not be available on Tuesday. However, activities related to net banking and ATMs will continue as before.

In all, banks are going to remain closed for a total of eight days apart from the general holiday on Sunday and two Saturdays. It should be noted that most bank holidays in May are region specific and may not apply across the country.

Banks remained closed on 1st May for Maharashtra Day and May Day. Banking activities were not available in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana, West Bengal, Bihar and Goa on the first day of the month. Banks remained closed in Shimla area the next day due to Municipal Elections 2023.

On account of Buddha Purnima, May 5, banks were closed in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Jammu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, New Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Tripuri and Mizoram.

Banking operations will not be available in Karnataka due to voting for the General Assembly Elections to be held on May 10.

Banks will remain closed in Sikkim on May 16 on account of Statehood Day. There will be a bank holiday in Himachal Pradesh on May 22 on account of Maharana Pratap Jayanti.

Bank holidays in India are divided into two categories – national and government.

Also known as gazetted holidays, national holidays are observed on three days – Republic Day, Independence Day and Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. Banks and financial institutions remain closed on these days. National holiday is celebrated all over the country.

Thereafter, government holidays are further classified as state government bank holidays and central government bank holidays. While state government bank holidays are region-specific, central government bank holidays are observed across the country.
