“T20 is a team game as we all know. It’s almost like football. Goal scorers are like your opening batsman or wicket taker. But they are worth it only if your goalkeeper or defender is up for it,” the veteran spinner told Cricbuzz.

Ashwin returned to the pavilion after scoring 28 runs in 23 balls. Initially, it was not clear whether the decision was Ashwin’s or directed by the team management, with Rajasthan coach Kumar Sangakkara later revealing that it was a joint call.

Sangakkara said the issue was discussed with everyone except Ashwin before the Rajasthan batsman became the first person to retire in the IPL.

According to the rules, a batsman may also choose to leave the field without injury or illness and will be considered “retired”. A player may return to bat only with the consent of the opposing captain.

After Ashwin walked off the field, Rajasthan scored 30 runs in the remaining 10 balls of their innings. Coming batsman Riyan Parag scored 8 off 4 but last-minute fireworks off Shimron Hetmyer’s bat took the total to 165.

In reply, Lucknow Super Giants scored 162 runs and eventually lost the match by 3 runs.
