Britain’s Queen Elizabeth sent a congratulatory message to Gareth Southgate and his England team ahead of the Euro 2020 final against Italy at Wembley on Sunday.

Southgate’s team has reached the European Championship title for the first time, ending England’s 55-year wait to reach the final.

The 95-year-old Queen handed over the World Cup to England captain Bobby Moore when the Three Lions won their only major trophy against West Germany at Wembley in 1966.

“Fifty years ago I was fortunate enough to present the World Cup to Bobby Moore and I saw what it meant for players, management and support staff to reach and win the finals of a major international football tournament.”

On the verge of a historic victory with England, the monarch said: “I want to send my and my family’s congratulations to all of you on reaching the final of the European Championships.

“I send my best wishes for tomorrow with the hope that history will record not only your success but also the spirit, commitment and pride with which you have conducted yourself.”

The Queen, who presented the Euro 96 trophy to the victorious German players at Wembley, is not expected to participate in Sunday’s final.

Her grandson, Prince William, is set to be the senior royal representative in the final in his role as president of the English Football Association.
