Friendship, love and then a storm of memories in the crematorium
Date 6th May 2022, 5 PM. Place 1 km away from Marpalle village cremation ground. Many people, including Nagaraju’s family, relatives and wife Sultana, have gathered. The slender Sultana is sobbing sitting among the women. Sultana says, ‘We both knew each other for more than 5 years. Raj had come as a gust of cold wind in the scorching afternoon of my life. I had the ground under my feet and the sky above my head, but my brother took everything away from me.’

Nagaraju, a resident of Marpalle village in Vikarabad district, met Sultana for the first time when he went to the Junior College in Hyderabad to study. The son of the coolie parents, Nagaraju had died on Sultana at first sight. When the friendship of both turned into love, it is not known. As time passed, their love deepened. If he affectionately called Sultana as Pallavi, Sultana would call him Raj. After studies, Sultana got a job in a national bank. Nagaraju started working as a salesman in a car showroom.

Nagaraju agreed to convert for the sake of love
Sultana’s father had passed away 4 years ago. The responsibility of looking after the family was on his brother Syed Mobin Ahmed. Mobin sells fruits. Mobin was looking for a boy to marry his sister. Sultana told this to Nagaraju. After this Nagaraju also reached his house asking for Sultana’s hand. Raj talks about a relationship with Sultana’s mother, but she refuses. On this, Nagaraju proposed to convert to Islam and then get married. This too was rejected by Sultana’s mother.

In a conversation with The News Minute, Sultana says, My mother did not say anything to herself on Raj and my relationship. The mother said the same thing that the brother had said. Brother wanted me to marry a boy of his choice in the Muslim community itself. He had confirmed my relationship with a Muslim boy. Mother used to say that if I marry a Hindu boy, Mobin will kill me.’

Brother hanged twice, but survived…
Sultana says, the family members beat up because of their insistence on marrying Nagaraju. Brother Mobin tried to hang me twice, but I survived. At that time I also ignored Raj so that we could part ways, but it was not possible for me to get away from Raj. I could not live without Raj. We decided to get married. Even a day before the wedding, my brother beat me up for 13 hours. He was asking for Raj’s phone number and address. He wanted to threaten to kill Raj too, but I did not open my mouth. Didn’t tell him anything. On the night of January 30, 2022, hiding from my family members, I came to Hyderabad with Raj.

Nagaraju, 25, and Sultana, 23, got married on 31 January 2022 at the Arya Samaj Mandir in Hyderabad. Nagaraju’s family accepted this relationship, but Sultana’s family did not accept the Hindu son-in-law on any condition. In an interview given to CNN, Sultana said, ‘After marriage, there was a apprehension of something wrong going on. So both of us went to Mominpet police station and asked for police protection. Then left Hyderabad and went to Visakhapatnam. Broke your sim card. Spent three months in secret. Then one day there was a talk with the cousin, he said that whatever happened happened. Come home now Meet the best Then it seemed that the clouds of fear had dissipated. We returned to Hyderabad. Life started coming in the normal routine.

On May 4, Nagaraju left the showroom early. Usually, he used to change office clothes while leaving home, but left in office clothes that day. He had to take his wife for shopping. He first reached his sister’s house. From there he took wife Sultana along. Then both were going towards the market by bike. He was attacked while passing through Saroornagar in Hyderabad at 9 pm. The attackers attacked Nagaraju with a rod and a knife.

Sultana says, ‘Four to five attackers came on two motorcycles. They attacked us at the signal near Tehsildar’s office. we fell. I asked Raj to run away. He had a chance, but he did not leave me. In this, my brother hit him with a rod on the head from behind. Raj fell. The other person started tattooing with a knife.

I fought. Tried to save Raj. She lay on top of him. They pushed me apart. I cried, begged. She kept begging for Raj’s life in front of her brother. Said- leave Raj, I will come home with you. The crowd standing there kept pleading to save Raj, but no one listened to me. Brother did not feel sorry. No one from the crowd came forward to save him. Everyone kept making videos of my deteriorating world. Police also arrived after 30 minutes.

… two days ago, the books of civil services exam were bought and given
Sultana recalls that Raj wanted me to be a collector. I am interested in studies. It’s nice to read. I wanted to study further, but my family did not allow me to study further. Two days before the incident, Raj bought the civil services exam books and gave them to me. Told you to read as much as you want. I will work day and night, but I will teach you. I am with you in your every decision. You just focus on your dream. In the last 5 to 6 years, he supported me in every moment, every decision.

Will fight for justice for husband
Sultana’s brother Syed Mobin Ahmed and relative Muhammad Masood Ahmed were arrested. The police claimed that within 24 hours of the incident, both the accused were arrested and sent to judicial custody. Sultana is currently living in her in-laws’ house at Marpalle. She says that she will stay with Raj’s family. She will take care of her family like a husband. Fight for justice for them.

If the police had not taken carelessness, brother would have been alive.
Nagaraju’s sister Ramadevi said, ‘My brother-in-law went to the police station and asked for help. Both also approached the district superintendent of police for their safety. The police called both the families to the police station. He was counselled. Even after this my brother was murdered, so it was definitely the negligence of the police. If the police had taken the matter seriously, my brother would have been alive.
