The accused, identified as Paramjit Singh of Ludhiana, was apprehended soon after the incident by devotees and task force members at Takht and was later handed over to the police.
On Thursday, the Ropar police added section 18 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and a few more sections of the Indian Penal Code against the accused, who were already booked under FIR 122 in Anandpur Sahib police station under section 295A of the IPC. was recorded. On Thursday also, the police has managed to extend the remand of the accused till September 21. Earlier on Monday, the court had given him four days’ police remand.
Police have found in their investigation that the accused was receiving money from abroad and was receiving around $1000 every month for the last two years. The Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib had two days ago alleged that accused Paramjit was directly related to the controversial Dera Sacha Sauda and his father Gurmel Singh was part of the seven-member committee of the Dera.
The police have not found any discrepancy in foreign funding, as Gurmel Singh, who has been living in the USA since 2013, was sending money to his son for daily needs. Paramjeet was a drug addict and was undergoing treatment and had also lost his dairy business.
On 5 September, the accused was also baptized at Gurdwara Dukhnivaran Sahib Ludhiana, but soon abandoned it. The accused also told the police that in September 2019, he was thrown out of Sirsa’s tent for smoking.
Police are now probing the possible involvement of another accused, who was reportedly present at Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib during the incident of crime. “The members of the committee of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib suspect that some other person was involved with whom Paramjeet had gesture-communication before committing the crime. We are looking for one more suspect,” a senior police officer told TOI.
on Wednesday, the chairman of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) Bibi Jagir Kaur had sought addition of UAPA sections against the accused.
In October last year, the Fatehgarh Sahib police had registered a UAPA case against the 20-year-old accused for hurting religious sentiments, who had allegedly committed the offense of sacrilege in two villages- Jalla and later Tarkhan Majra. He was overpowered by committee members while his car was damaged by Sikh protesters.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Minorities has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident on Wednesday and directed the state government to submit a report of the incident and measures taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents within seven days.
