Following the demand of central deputation, Punjab Police Chief VK Bhavra has now applied for leave of two months. The Punjab Police led by him has recently been criticized for handling the law and order situation in the state.

After he goes on leave, the state police is soon going to get a new DGP once again, which is the fourth in six months.

Bhavra was appointed state president in January. He had come under criticism for his handling of the law and order situation as the state police under him faced the notoriety of the attack on his intelligence headquarters and the subsequent murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala.

The Punjab Police had also faced embarrassment by arresting some of the key accused in the Moose Wala case.

A few days back, Bhavra had reportedly made himself available for central deputation. With him expected to go on leave, speculation has started on who will be the caretaker DGP.

DGP (Prisons) Harpreet Singh Sidhu and DGP-cum-Special Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Gaurav Yadav are said to be the front runners for the post, in case Bhavra goes on leave.

The state government will have to send a panel of officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to shortlist three officers, one of whom will be selected by the state government for the post of DGP.
