CHANDIGARH/LUDHIANA: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann has offered 1,000 acre of land in Fatehgarh Sahib district to the Centre for setting up a textile park under the PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel Parks (PM Mitra) scheme.
In a letter to Union textile minister Piyush Goyal, Mann expressed the desire for setting up the ambitious project in Fatehgarh Sahib. He envisioned that once commissioned, the project would help Punjab emerge as the textile hub of the country. He also hoped that the project will put the state on a high growth trajectory of industrial growth and help in attracting investments and opening new vistas of employment for the youth.
Mann said the Centre had approved the scheme for setting up of seven PM Mitra across the country in partnership with interested state governments. He conveyed to Goyal that under this scheme the state government was ready for setting up of a textile park at Fatehgarh Sahib.
Mann said all environmental clearances and norms fixed by Centre and state pollution control boards would be adhered to while setting up this project. He asserted that one of the basic requirements for the project was that the state government should have ready availability of contiguous and encumbrance free land parcels of 1,000 acres. He said the Punjab government has already identified land parcels in Fatehgarh Sahib for the said project adding that all the necessary requirements would be fulfilled for setting up this project at the earliest.
Interestingly, the textile and garment industry had been demanding allotment of land for the now scrapped textile park project in Mattewara at some alternate place in Ludhiana. The latest development has dashed the hopes of Ludhiana businessmen.
Vinod Thapar, chairman of Apparel Technology and Common Facilitation Centre, said, “The project, if set up at any place other than Ludhiana, will be a complete failure because the support system for such a huge project exists only in Ludhiana.”
Harish Kairpal, president of Ludhiana MSME Association, said, “The proposal of offering land at Fatehgarh Sahib for the project is ill-conceived as ground realities have been ignored. As far as textile and garment industry is concerned, Ludhiana is the natural choice…because of availability of raw material, intermediate units for processing and job work of different kinds and availability of skilled labour.”
