Patiala: A group of Kashmiri students The hostel of an engineering college in Sangrur post was allegedly attacked by a group of students from UP and Bihar India-Pakistan Twenty20 World Cup Match on Sunday night.
Though no case has been registered following lack of police complaint, the college authorities have constituted a five-member committee to probe the incident. departmental action against all those found guilty.
A scuffle broke out between the two student groups at around 11.30 pm on Sunday when students from Bihar and UP allegedly broke into their hostel rooms and broke their belongings. Police said around 25 to 30 students from both the groups had entered the cricket match after a scuffle after some Kashmiri students cheered Pakistan’s victory against India.
A senior police officer revealed that the students resorted to hooting and sloganeering over the match, but none of the Kashmiri students raised anti-India slogans or azaadi slogans as rumors were being spread on social media sites.
The college authorities revealed that a total of 70 Kashmiri students and around 100 students from UP and Bihar are studying and living in the engineering college.
Bhai Gurdas Institute of Engineering and Technology Director Guninderjit Singh said: “We have constituted a five-member committee comprising Dean Students Welfare, Dean Affairs and others to probe the incident. Departmental action will be taken against all those found guilty. There were minor disputes and heated arguments between students of Kashmir and students of UP and Bihar, but some provocative videos going viral on social media are not related to our college incident.
He said, “Not a single student has been injured in the incident and it was just a heated argument between them. Our college students had even shared on Facebook that none of them were injured. Several pictures and Videos are going viral. The name of our college is fake.”
Sangrur SSP Swapan Sharma said, “We reached the campus on Monday morning and the matter was settled as both the groups reached an agreement and they did not file any police complaint. No student has been injured but the campus authorities decided to take Assured. Take corrective steps to avoid any such incident in future.”
National Spokesperson Jammu and Kashmir Students Union, Nasir Khuhmi tweeted early Monday and appealed to Punjab CM and DGP to ensure the safety of Kashmiri students studying in the state. Nasir said, “Students told me that students from Bihar barged into their rooms and thrashed them, ransacked rooms and damaged halls, abused and beat up some other people. It has increased the feeling of insecurity and anxiety among the people. Kashmiri youth are studying and working outside as well as working among their parents and relatives in Kashmir.”
Meanwhile in Sangrur, members of the Association for Democratic Rights burnt an effigy of fascist forces at Barnala Chowk at around 6 pm on Monday.
Association for Democratic Rights leader Swaranjit Singh said, “We have burnt the effigy and demanded registration of a case against those who attacked Kashmiri students.” We also demanded that the college authorities should allow us to meet Kashmiri students as no student is allowed to meet anyone. The truth will come out on the number of students injured in the incident.
