Punjab: IPS officer Viresh Kumar Bhavra takes charge as new Director General of Police

New Delhi: IPS officer Viresh Kumar Bhavra took over as the new Director General of Police of Punjab after the Congress government led by Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Saturday nominated him for the post on the consideration of a panel received from the Union Public Service Commission.

“On the consideration of the panel received from the Union Public Service Commission, the Governor of Punjab, Viresh Kumar Bhawra, is pleased to appoint IPS as the Director General of Police. Punjab (chief of police force). His tenure will be for a minimum period of two years from the date of assumption of office in pursuance of the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India dated July 3, 2018,” the order of the Governor of Punjab, as quoted by news agency ANI.

The panel committee had recommended a panel consisting of names of three officers suitable for appointment to the post of DGP (chief of police force).

Dinkar Gupta and Prabodh Kumar were the other two officers.

Viresh Bhavra, a 1987-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, played the role of acting DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyay, who is currently facing investigation over a security breach during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab on January 5.

7 IPS officers transferred in SSP Ferozepur Punjab

Meanwhile, the Punjab government on Saturday transferred seven IPS officers, including senior superintendent of police Firozpur.

IPS officer Harmandeep Singh Hans, SSP Ferozepur has been posted as Commandant Third IRB, Ludhiana, news agency PTI reported.

IPS Narinder Bhargava, the commandant of the third IRB Ludhiana, will be the new SSP Ferozepur.

IPS officer Harmandeep Hans was the SSP of Ferozepur on Wednesday during a “security lapse” in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy got stuck on a flyover during PM Modi’s visit to Punjab.

AK Mittal has been posted as Inspector General of Police, Rupnagar, while Sukhchain Singh has been posted as Amritsar Commissioner.

Nanak Singh has been made SSP Gurdaspur and Alka Meena has been made SSP Barnala. Two PPS officers Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh and Kuljeet Singh have been given new additions and new posting orders.
