The Punjab Government has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the sacrilege attempt at Shri Darbar Sahib in Amritsar. Deputy CM Sukhjinder Randhawa, looking after the Ministry of Home Affairs, said that those who hurt religious sentiments should be approved for life imprisonment. These laws were passed by the Punjab government itself. which are pending in the President’s Office.
Randhawa argues that the existing sections of IPC 295 and 295A provide for only 3 years imprisonment. Which is not enough to deal with the incidents of sacrilege. Being a Punjab border state, it is very important to maintain brotherhood. Strict punishment should be given to those who disturb communal harmony through sacrilege.

Randhawa wrote that the Punjab Assembly had passed the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Punjab Amendment Bill 2018 and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC) Punjab Amendment Bill 2018. In which, along with Sri Guru Granth Sahib, arrangements were made for life imprisonment for sacrilege of Srimad Bhagwat Gita, Quran and Bible. These bills were approved by the Governor of Punjab on 12 August 2018. After this, the bill is pending for the assent of the President since October 2018.

Dishonesty is becoming a big issue in Punjab
Randhawa told the Union Home Minister that sacrilege of holy scriptures is becoming a big issue in Punjab. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib is not considered an object but a living Guru by the Sikhs. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib is respected according to Sikh decorum. In this it was realized that the existing law is not sufficient for strictness.
The law was made in the Badal government, the Captain amended
This law was first made during the Akali-BJP government. However, at that time only the sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib was included in it. For this reason it was returned. Then when the Captain government came to power, it was amended in 2018. In this the sacred texts of the four religions were included in it. In the amendment of the Badal government, the death penalty was imposed on dishonesty but later it was changed to life imprisonment.
