Punjab government sets up panel to probe lapses during PM’s visit, report in three days

The Punjab government on Thursday constituted a two-member high-level committee to “thoroughly investigate” the lapses committed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ferozepur.

The committee, which will submit its report within three days, comprises Justice (retd) Mehtab Singh Gill and principal secretary, home affairs and justice, Anurag Verma.

The spokesman said that a high level committee has been constituted by the Punjab Government to thoroughly investigate the lapses committed during the Prime Minister’s visit to Ferozepur yesterday.

In a major security lapse due to the blockade by protesters in Ferozepur on Wednesday, the Prime Minister’s convoy was stuck on a flyover. He had returned from Punjab without attending any event, including a rally.

The Union Home Ministry has directed the state government to file a report immediately, saying that it did not ensure the necessary deployment. Home Minister Amit Shah said that such negligence in the security process during the visit of the Prime Minister is completely unacceptable and accountability will be fixed.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has denied any security lapse or political motive behind it and said that his government is ready to investigate. The incident sparked a major political controversy with the BJP alleging that the ruling Congress in Punjab “tried to physically harm” the prime minister, while other parties also attacked the state government over the issue of law and order. Did.

Modi who had reached Bathinda had to travel by road to the National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala in Ferozepur due to bad weather. When the convoy reached near Piyarena village on the Ferozepur-Moga road, about 30 km from Hussainiwala, some protesters blocked the road, after which the PM’s convoy was halted for about 15-20 minutes at a flyover.

Modi, who was visiting Punjab after two years, was to lay the foundation stone for development projects worth over Rs 42,750 crore, including the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway and the PGIMER satellite centre. He was also to address a rally in Ferozepur.
