Punjab got its first Dalit Chief Minister in Charanjit Singh Channi; Congress’s ‘safe bet’

According to Congress MLA Pritam Kotbhai, after Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, whose name was reportedly proposed as the chief minister, Channi’s appointment comes as a surprise. The names of Ambika Soni, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Sunil Jakhar were also in the news.

The developments come a day after senior Congress leader Amarinder Singh resigned from the chief minister’s post amid a bitter power struggle with state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was earlier promoted as Punjab Congress chief.

Who is Charanjit Singh Channi?

Channi, 47, a Congressman from Punjab, serves as the Minister of Technical Education and Industrial Training, Government of Punjab.

He represents the Chamkaur Sahib assembly constituency. From 2015 to 2016, he was the Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly. He replaced Sunil Jakhar and replaced HS Phoolka.

He is a member of Ramdassia Sikh community and was appointed as a cabinet minister in Captain Amarinder Singh’s cabinet in Punjab on March 16, 2017.

He served as Municipal Councilor for three terms and became the Chairman of Municipal Council Kharar for two terms. He was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly for the first time in 2007.

Early life and struggle

Born on 2 April 1972 in Makrona Kalan village near Chamkaur Sahib, Charanjit received his primary education from Government Primary School. He was born in a deprived family to father S. Harsa Singh and Mata Ajmer Kaur were born in the house.

His father struggled a lot to get financial security for his family, for which he also went to Malaysia. He worked hard and eventually succeeded in his ventures. He returned and settled in Kharar town starting a tent house business, where Channi also played as a ‘tent boy’. His father is also known to be very generous in his business dealings.
