Though she appeared for UPSC CSE in 2020, Gamini Singla could barely crack the prelims. But she did not give up on her dream of becoming an IAS officer and appeared in the exam once again in 2021. Despite being offered a job from the prestigious JP Morgan during his college placement, Gamini turned down the love offer of UPSC Civil Services. Her family, a resident of Sunam in Punjab’s Sangrur district, later shifted to Anandpur Sahib. She is an alumnus of Punjab Engineering College (PEC) Chandigarh, from where she pursued her BTech in Computer Science Engineering (CSE). After completing his graduation, he was selected by JP Morgan for a 5-month internship through campus placement.

The internship was part of his college curriculum, and JP Morgan offered him a job after completing the internship, but Gamini turned it down for his dream of becoming an IAS officer. “I realized that satisfaction is very important while choosing a career. I always feel satisfaction when I work among people and do something for them. In civil services one can work in diverse fields. I thought it would help me bring out my full potential and always help other people,” she explains.
He started preparing for UPSC CSE from 2019 after completing his B.Tech. For Prelims, there are two parts – Static and Current Affairs. For the static part, he studied the spectrum from Indian Politics, 10th to 12th NCERT Books for Geography, Class 6 to 12 NCERT Books for Ancient and Medieval History and Modern History by M Laxmikant.
“I opted to revise these same books over and over again instead of picking new resources. Revision is a very important part of preparation. The questions in the static section are straightforward and hence one who studies well from these books Will do, he will get points easily,” Gamini explained.
“When it comes to current affairs, reading newspapers on a daily basis covers that part of the exam. I also appeared for many mock interviews as it helps me to find out my weakness and strength. This is a good strategy for UPSC. He also took coaching from Unacademy.
One must have complete knowledge about the syllabus of UPSC both Mains and Prelims. In addition, Gamini claims that she used to go to a nearby government school and sometimes give her mock tests without electricity so that her body becomes accustomed to the environment and “I don’t think this is a new environment in which I can live.” I’m entering,” she said.
For Mains also, he gave many mock tests. She also says that self-assessment of these mock exams is very important as it helps in knowing their flaws. “Every weekend, I used to go to school and from there take three-hour mock tests for both main and preliminary exams,” she said.
Between her first and second attempt, she explains that she lacked strategy. Though she was studying hard during her first attempt, it was her proper strategy that helped her in the second attempt. “I studied previous year question papers and gave more mock tests. In the first attempt, I didn’t have enough time to take the mock exam and couldn’t clear the prelims. I didn’t do enough answer writing in the first attempt,” Gamini told News18.com.
Gamini says that in the personality test, it is the knowledge of the individual which is reflected in the personality that helps in cracking the interview round. “A few days before the exam, I had to go through my Detailed Application Form (DAF), what I have written, and for current affairs, newspapers were enough,” she said.

With the help of his father, who helped him uncover current news and events, it saved him a lot of time. Both his father and mother are medical officers in the Himachal Pradesh government and his brother has completed his graduation from IIT Kharagpur.
Gamini explains that the interview questions were multifaceted. “I was asked about the relevance of the United Nations in the current scenario as I was Director General of the PEC Model UN during my college days, in which I participated in some community-building process and when it hosted I was part of the team. was leading in our college,” says Gamini.
