Punjab elections: Sidhu hits out at Aam Aadmi Party, says people will not fall prey to populist measures

Hitting out at AAP over AAP’s SOAP announcements ahead of the Punjab Assembly polls, state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu on Wednesday said people would not fall prey to populist measures without the support of a policy framework, defined budget allocation and implementation metrics. He said that true leaders do not give “lollipop” and instead focus on building the foundation of society and economy.

Ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal has announced several concessions for different sections of the society. During her visit to Punjab on Monday, she had promised that if AAP comes to power, her government will transfer Rs 1,000 every month to the account of every woman in the state and termed it as the “world’s biggest women empowerment programme”. Earlier, he had promised free electricity up to 300 units to every household, 24-hour power supply and free treatment and medicines in government hospitals.

Speaking to reporters in Amritsar, Sidhu hit out at Kejriwal for making lofty promises to various sections, including youth and women. He said that thousands of crores of rupees will be spent on Kejriwal’s financial assistance scheme for women and other promises and it will be more than the state budget.

He said that AAP leaders are giving ‘lollipop’ to the people. Sidhu’s remarks came a day after Kejriwal praised the Congress leader for taking up issues of public welfare.

On various announcements made by Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi for various sections, Sidhu said, “Whatever our Chief Minister has said…the party will support him and stand by him.” He has done what former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh could not do in four and a half years. The state Congress president said, “His (Chani’s) intention is right.” He said that the Chief Minister has the support of the party.

Later, in a series of tweets, Sidhu said that people “will not fall prey to populist schemes”. The UPA government made policies to transform the society and economy of India. Today Punjab needs a policy based structural change in its economy. People will not fall prey to populist “schemes” without the support of a policy framework, defined budget allocation and implementation metrics,” he said. The Congress leader said that populist schemes respond rapidly to popular demands, without any consideration on governance and the economy. Did it

“History shows (that) populist measures only hurt people in the long run. True leaders will not give lollipops but will focus on building the foundation of society and economy.” Credit games don’t last long, they inflict debt on society. burden and affect economic development. Punjab needs policy-based redemption and soon every Punjabi will be as rich and prosperous as we were in earlier times. Punjab model is the way forward!!”

Former minister Sidhu said that in 2017 he had presented the Punjab Entertainment Tax Bill before the state cabinet to eliminate the cable mafia to strengthen the local operators. He said he wanted to end the alleged monopoly of an operator by allowing him to pay the taxes due to the government because “only then can the benefits of cheap connections be transferred to the people”.

Will bring in a “concrete” policy-based “Punjab model. Get rid of the monopoly created by the cable mafia like Badal. The SOP will deplete the state exchequer and eliminate livelihoods, but will actually uplift the poor and the tyranny of multiple system operators.” does nothing to eliminate…,” he said. Punjab Assembly elections will be held early next year.
