Punjab elections: Congress announces second list, makes exception to ‘one family, one ticket’ rule

After a long delay, the Congress on Tuesday late night released its second list of 23 candidates for the February 20 Punjab Assembly elections. With this, the party has now announced 109 candidates for the elections.

The oldest party has made its ‘one family, one ticket’ exception. It had fielded Vikram Bajwa, son-in-law of former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, from Sahnewal, while earlier it had fielded Bhattal from Sangrur’s Lehar.

The party has not released the names of candidates for eight assembly seats, including Patiala (Urban). Former CM Captain Amarinder Singh had contested from this seat in the last assembly elections, but dropped out of the party a few months back and formed his own organization, Punjab Lok Congress. The new party is in alliance with the BJP, and Amarinder is once again contesting from the same constituency.

Karan Brar, daughter-in-law of former CM Harcharan Singh Brar from Muktsar, is also included in the second list.

The list also includes two AAP leaders who resigned recently and have crossed over: Jagtar Singh Jagga Hisowal from Jagraon and Ashu Bangar from Ferozepur (Rural). Hisowal had won from Raikot in 2017 as an AAP candidate.

Among the other prominent candidates is Vijay Sharma Tinku, a liquor contractor from Kharar constituency. The party has also removed sitting MLA from Amargarh Surjit Dhiman and appointed Sumit Singh, Officer on Special Duty to Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu in his place.

However, the party has given ticket to Surjit’s son Jaswinder Dhiman from Sunam seat.
