Union Minister Gajendra Shekhawat on Monday said that the BJP will contest the assembly elections in Punjab in collaboration with Amarinder Singh’s Punjab Lok Congress and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa’s SAD (United) and the parties will release a joint manifesto. Both Rajya Sabha MPs Singh and Dhindsa met top BJP leaders, including Speaker JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, at Shah’s residence here to chalk out election strategy.

“Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, Amarinder Singh and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa held a meeting here. And it was decided that BJP, Singh’s party and Dhindsa’s party would jointly contest the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab,” Shekhawat told the media after the meeting. Two leaders from each party to finalize the seat sharing agreement.

Sources in the BJP said that they see the elections in Punjab as a pentagonal fight as various farmer organizations apart from Congress, SAD and AAP may be in the fray. Singh formed his own party, the Punjab Lok Congress, a few days after resigning as chief minister and leaving the Congress.

Earlier, the Akali Dal, one of the oldest allies of the BJP, had pulled out of the NDA over the issue of agriculture sector laws. An alliance with Amarinder Singh and Dhindsa will tie the BJP in with prominent Sikh faces in the state.
