Punjab Congress crisis: 78 out of 79 MLAs wanted to replace Capt Amarinder, says Surjewala

Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala made a big disclosure on Saturday saying that 78 out of 79 MLAs had written to the party high command demanding changes in the party. PunjabA few months before the state assembly elections.

Commenting on the ongoing political crisis in Punjab Congress and former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Surjewala said, “78 out of 79 MLAs had written that the Chief Minister should be changed. When a Chief Minister loses the confidence of the MLAs, he should resign himself.”

Captain Amarinder Singh, who had resigned as the Chief Minister of Punjab, had said that he was “humiliated” by the Congress. After relinquishing the Punjab chief minister’s post, Captain Amarinder Singh had told reporters that he was now free to explore other options.

A few days ago, Captain Amarinder clarified that he was not joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but said he had no intention of continuing with the Congress.

He said that Congress is heading towards collapse and senior leaders are being completely ignored and voice is not being given. The disgruntled Congress veteran has also changed his Twitter bio, which no longer names the party but describes him as an “Army veteran, former Punjab Chief Minister who continues to serve the state”.

Denying any move to join the BJP, Amarinder said he would leave the Congress where he was “totally humiliated and not trusted”. “I will resign… will not be in the party,” he said, adding that he was still thinking of his options in the interest of Punjab, whose security was a prime priority for him.

“I will not be treated with such disrespect… I will not take such insults,” he said. He said that his principles and beliefs do not allow him to continue in the Congress.

The party’s top leadership in Delhi remained silent on the developments in Punjab and a spokesperson only said that AICC in-charge of the state Harish Rawat is keeping a watch. But a “group of 23” made up of party leaders seeking organizational reforms in the Congress chose the day to express concern over developments in Punjab and elsewhere.

Senior party leader Kapil Sibal said what is happening with Congress in Punjab benefits Pakistan and ISI and remembered the state’s history. He told reporters that such developments should be discussed on the party’s platform.

This political drama within the Congress has plunged the party into a new crisis a few months before the Punjab Assembly elections.
