Tension intensifies between Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and rebel MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu

The leaders of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee were becoming concerned about the current situation and the meeting called by Sunil Jakhar was being seen as an attempt to gauge the mood within the party.

As the tussle between Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and rebel MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu intensified, Punjab Congress President Sunil Jakhar has called a meeting of 80 MLAs and over two dozen district heads at the state unit headquarters in Chandigarh on Monday. Interestingly, those who lost in the 2017 state assembly elections have also been called for the meeting.

This came at a time when various factions of Punjab Congress were showing strength. When Sidhu was meeting party MLAs and other ministers in Patiala in anticipation of his promotion as PCC chief, a group of 10 MLAs led by senior party leader Sukhpal Khaira issued a statement supporting CM Amarinder Singh. Kiya and demanded a public apology from Sidhu.

State unit leaders were getting worried about the prevailing situation and the meeting called by Jakhar was being seen as an attempt to gauge the mood within the party.

According to sources, a possible resolution may be moved by the party MLAs, stating that they will abide by the decision of the party high command to name the new state unit chief.

Sources said the party MLAs are also expected to urge the high command to make the announcement without any further delay.
