Days after party leaders and workers were gheraoed against farmers in Punjab’s Rajpura, state BJP leaders including state unit chief Ashwini Sharma met party president JP Nadda here on Saturday. Around two dozen BJP leaders from Punjab met Nadda at the party headquarters here. BJP general secretary Tarun Chugh and party in-charge of Punjab Dushyant Gautam were present in the meeting.

Harjit Singh Grewal, who was present in the meeting, said that Punjab BJP leaders shared their concerns with Nadda and also complained about the “partisan” approach of the state police. Last Sunday, around a dozen BJP leaders and workers were gheraoed. Protesting farmers at Rajpura in Punjab’s Patiala district were allowed to step out of their homes for nearly 12 hours. They were allowed to step out in the early hours of Monday only after the intervention of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

When contacted, Gautam said party leaders from Punjab shared their concerns and described the situation after a “politically motivated” protest by a section of farmers in the Congress-ruled state. “Naddaji has assured them that the party stands firmly with its workers in Punjab.”

Most farmers in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh have been protesting against the Centre’s three agricultural laws along the Delhi border for months. Farmers have tried to attack many BJP leaders of Punjab including Union Minister Som Prakash.
