Punjab Assembly passes resolution against Agneepath scheme

The Punjab Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution against the Centre’s Agneepath Defense Recruitment Scheme. Two BJP MLAs Ashwini Sharma and Jangi Lal Mahajan opposed the proposal. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann introduced the motion in the House.

Akali MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali supported the proposal and demanded withdrawal of the plan. As per the resolution, the House has recommended to the state government to take up the matter with the central government so that the Agneepath scheme can be withdrawn immediately.

“unilateral announcement of Agneepath scheme by the government” India Widespread reactions have been witnessed in all states including Punjab,” Mann said while reading out the resolution. The Punjab Vidhan Sabha strongly feels that the scheme in which the youth will be kept only for a period of four years and only up to 25 per cent is neither in the best interest of national security nor in the interest of the youth of this country. .

“This policy is likely to create discontent among the youth who want to serve the country’s armed forces throughout their lives,” Mann said. He said that it should be highlighted that more than one lakh soldiers of Punjab serve in the armed forces of the country and many of them make the supreme sacrifice of their lives at the country’s borders every year. “The youth of Punjab consider it a matter of pride and honor to serve in the Indian Armed Forces and are renowned for their valor and courage.

“The scheme has crushed the dreams of many youths of Punjab who are aspiring to join the armed forces as regular soldiers,” Mann said. Mann, while moving the motion, said that the scheme also has a tendency to dilute the long-standing spirit of the armed forces.
