His supporters said that those who refused to give ticket to Saini need to be taught a lesson. Angad is the only sitting MLA from Doaba constituency who has been denied ticket. His wife Aditi Singh, who was a Congress MLA in Uttar Pradesh, earlier joined the BJP there.
Congress insiders said the party was already worried as it had not taken tough decisions earlier even though it had considered replacing some of the sitting MLAs. Now it is coming to the fore that the electoral battle on these seats will be difficult. Party sources said Angad was already having trouble with his nomination. After many years, Congress has given ticket to the extended family of Congress veteran late Dilbag Singh. Though there were political tussles within the family, party tickets remained with the veteran’s relatives. Dilbag Singh was a minister, had a huge influence, and even won as an independent when Congress refused a ticket. He was instrumental in making Nawanshahr a district in the 1990s.
After his death, Congress fielded his wife Amar Kaur in the by-election, but his son Charanjit Singh Saini contested as an independent and won and later joined the Congress. Later his cousin and Angad’s father Prakash Singh also remained MLA from this seat. After his death, Angad’s mother was also an MLA in 2012-17. In 2017 Angad got ticket and his uncle Charanjit Singh Saini contested on AAP ticket but lost.
Late on Sunday evening, Angad and his supporters announced that they would hold a big meeting on Monday morning to decide on the course ahead.
