A massive fire broke out at Moshi Garbage Depot in Pune on Wednesday evening. As per available information, the fire started around 5 pm and started hours later. Five fire tenders are trying to douse the fire.
Off the Pune-Nashik Highway, Moshi Garbage Depot is the landfill site for the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. The site sees daily garbage dumping from the municipal body. Most of this waste is mixed waste.
There is a waste-to-energy facility on site.
Given the flammable nature of dumped waste, fires are not uncommon in the summer months. While small fires go unnoticed, large fires can take days or even hours to get under control.
