Pujari’s son unable to clear JEE Main gets high paying job in Boston Consulting Group

The son of a priest, 27-year-old Praveen Sridhar has taken up a job in the engineering field without clearing JEE Main, a variety of engineering entrance exams. After finishing his school at St. Mary’s School, Mayur Vihar, he did his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in Kerala.

His keen interest in robotics and machine learning took him to new heights. “I did not qualify for JEE, which I used to consider as a big setback then, but now that I look back, it is not a big deal. IITs are undoubtedly the most sought after and reputed institutes and it would have been a really great learning experience, but in the long run, skill matters more than college,” he says. It was during his research and interest in robotics and programming that he ventured into machine learning. “Soon after joining Plaksha Tech Leaders Fellowship Program as I wanted to take a year off to go deeper into various aspects of Artificial Intelligence and ML. Along with that, I really liked the fact that the program focused a lot on leadership potential with an excellent range of courses both technical and non-technical by eminent professors from across the globe.”

Praveen also took several free online courses in ML and Data Science. “It has the best quality free online MOOCs and video lectures from institutions like Stanford, Berkeley, etc. So I believe it is one of the most accessible areas if one has the dedication to self-learning , ” she added.

Realizing the need and non-availability of skill-based education, Praveen started a non-profit organization named TinkerHub.org in 2015 to make students more aware of 21st century skills and learning technology. “One of the main reasons we find this out is a lack of awareness of the real-world tools needed at the workplace. Colleges are good at providing the foundational knowledge needed to be an engineer, however, with problem-solving skills and the need for When it comes to the necessary equipment, students are left in the dark,” he explains.

Got success in six rounds of interview

Praveen explains that the recruitment drive for BCG involves a resume shortlisting, followed by an online coding test. “We had to solve data science related problems in a given amount of time. “The most important factor to do well in the recruitment process is to have a solid foundation in the subject followed by good practice with case studies,” he shares.

“My immediate plan is to learn as much as I can about applying data science to solve business problems at BCG Gamma. In the long term, I will become a CTO level leader leading the technology division of an impact-driven company. I want to grow into the status quo. I want to devote more time to TinkerHub and contribute back to the community,” Praveen says of his aspirations.
