The Puducherry Legislative Assembly met here on Friday and was adjourned sine die after holding a session for 24 minutes. The House passed the demands for additional grants for the year 2022-2023 sought by Chief Minister N Rangasamy and his cabinet colleagues for their respective departments.

The House also passed the Appropriation Bill introduced by the Chief Minister.

Earlier, Speaker R Selvam paid tributes to the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom as soon as the proceedings of the House began. The Speaker paid rich tributes to the late Queen on 8th September, 2022. All the MLAs stood in silence for two minutes in memory of the late Queen.

Following the reference to the tribute, all six opposition DMK members, led by Legislature Party leader R Siva, who were dressed in school uniform and symbolically carried bags to show that the school students are yet to receive their uniforms , urged the government to come up with a proposal for the state. for Puducherry.

Siva said it was indeed “sad that the elected government in Puducherry does not even have the authority to decide the transfer of officers”. Another DMK member AMH Nazim said democracy was made a mockery of in Puducherry as the elected government was “denied of powers”. ,

He said that the government should bring a proposal to give full statehood to Puducherry. Independent member G Nehru registered his strong protest against the posting of an IAS officer as the Commissioner of Puducherry Municipality without the knowledge of the government and demanded that Puducherry be granted statehood.

At one point, all the DMK MLAs shouted “We want statehood and Puducherry should not be cheated on the issue of statehood.”

The Speaker repeatedly asked the members to maintain calm and their appeals were not heeded.

The DMK members staged a brief walkout and returned to the House after a few minutes. Minutes before the DMK members did the same, both the Congress members also walked out of the House.

The House accepted the Appropriation Bill introduced by the Chief Minister. The Speaker announced the adjournment of the House sine die. The session lasted for 24 minutes.
