A group of protesters on Saturday entered and torched the private residence of Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, amid massive public protests in the country over the unprecedented economic crisis.
The incident came hours after Wickremesinghe offered to resign to make way for an all-party government, as protests intensified for the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa-led government in the country.
After a tense situation arose between the protesters and security forces on the ground, the protesters entered Wickremesinghe’s house and set the place on fire. Despite tear gas shells being fired to disperse the protesters, they entered his house and set the house on fire.
Earlier in the day, anti-government protesters barged into Rashtrapati Bhavan in Colombo. The whereabouts of the president was unknown and the 73-year-old leader is believed to have left the house before the huge crowd arrived.
