The AAP protested near the BJP headquarters here on Tuesday, a day after the presiding officer of the Delhi Municipal Corporation announced that members nominated by the Lieutenant Governor would be allowed to vote in the mayoral election.

The Aam Aadmi Party vs BJP tussle once again intensified in the national capital on Tuesday. While Aam Aadmi Party workers staged a sit-in near the BJP headquarters, Bharatiya Janata Party workers staged a sit-in at the AAP office.

The protest versus protest comes a day after the presiding officer of the Delhi Municipal Council announced that members nominated by the Lieutenant Governor would be allowed to vote in the mayoral election, leading to the cancellation of the election for the third time in a month.

Several AAP leaders and workers gathered at Rouse Avenue Road with placards in their hands and raised slogans against the BJP.

Meanwhile, BJP protesters at the AAP office raised slogans against Kejriwal and his party.

Security was beefed up around the BJP headquarters, with heavy police presence seen in the area and several barricades erected on Rouse Avenue Road.

The showdown is the latest in an ongoing saga between the two sides. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday failed to elect a mayor in the third attempt even after the house ruckus. The AAP said it had approached the Supreme Court so that the mayoral elections could be held “under court supervision”.

The first two sessions of the MCD House – held on January 6 and January 24 – were adjourned by the presiding officer following ruckus and heated exchanges between BJP and AAP members.

As per the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, 1957, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are to be elected in the very first session of the House after the civic elections. However, it has been two months since the municipal elections were held on December 4 and Delhi is yet to get a mayor.
