Protest in 2001: UP Court Sentences AAP MP Sanjay Singh, Five Others to 3-month Imprisonment

All the accused were granted bail on an application by their lawyers for appeal.

A special court on Wednesday sentenced AAP MP Sanjay Singh and five others to three months’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,500 in a case registered in 2001 for protesting frequent power cuts in the Uttar Pradesh town.

Special Magistrate of MP/MLA Court Yogesh Yadav sentenced Singh, former Samajwadi Party MLA Anoop Sanda, former corporator Kamal Srivastava and three others.

A case was registered against them under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly) and 341 (wrongful restraint).

All the accused were granted bail on an application by their lawyers for appeal.

Following the verdict, Singh tweeted in Hindi, “Convicted by Sultanpur court for protesting for people suffering from power cuts and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1500. I accept all the punishments and public interest The fight will continue. An appeal against the order will be in the relevant court.”
