  2. Pledge to be trustworthy because promises are the pillars of a happy, lasting, healthy relationship.
  3. Write down, or express, your promises and watch the miracle of love unfold before you. You don’t have to be a wordsmith to weave the words of the Promise. Just being honest and true to your feelings will do the trick.
  4. Get a box of chocolates, or flowers, balloons, card, or a teddy – whatever feels appropriate and express your feelings, keeping the spark alive in your relationship.

Promise Day: History

It is widely believed that the holiday has its roots in Lupercalia, an ancient Roman festival. The festival was held from 13 February to 15 February to celebrate fertility and the arrival of spring. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius I declared February 14 as St. Valentine’s Day. This was an attempt to replace the pagan celebration of Lupercalia with a Christian one.

While there have been many saints named Valentine throughout history, it is not entirely clear which one Pope Gelasius was referring to. While some believe that the holiday is named after a saint who was martyred in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II, others believe that Pope Gelasius, a bishop of Terni He was referring to who had also been martyred in Rome.
