Kaduva, a high-octane action-thriller that hit the theaters recently, has courted controversy over a dialogue. Though the film is doing well at the box office, the dialogues have created unrest in some sections of the society. Two controversial dialogues are given by Kuruvachan played by Prithviraj Sukumaran.
The dialogue of Kuruvachna points to disability with a negative connotation. As per the script, the exchange was between the protagonist Kuruvachan and Joseph Chandy played by Vivek Oberoi. The interaction between the two characters implies that the actions of the parents are responsible for the child’s disability. The audience has condemned the dialogue.
Parents of children with disabilities have submitted a letter to the Kerala Child Rights Commission and Social Justice Department not to communicate.
In a Facebook group titled M3DB, a member of Vipin KG wrote, “I saw Kaduva last evening. Prithviraj Sukumaran’s character says in a dialogue that “when a child is born deformed it is the parents’ fault.” This dialogue is very painful, degrading, discriminatory and an example of ridicule towards children with disabilities.
“Abusing such children is against human values, a violation of human rights, a denial of social justice and a legal crime,” he said. Vipin requested the crew to visit the Institute of Children with Disabilities and spend an hour with them.
Another dialogue from the film has been described as a misogynist take, which defames women. There is a scene where Kuruvachana questions the paternity of Elmma’s children. He questions the correctness of Seema’s character Elmma.
Talking about the film, Kaduva has been directed by Shaji Kailas. The film stars Arjun Ashokan, Sai Kumar, Siddiqui, Seema, Dilish Pothan, Vijayraghavan, Aju Varghese, Sudev Nair, Rahul Madhav, Kalabhavan Shajon and Priyanka Nair in the supporting cast.
The project is handled by Listin Stephen and Supriya Menon. It is jointly presented under the banner of Magic Frames and Prithviraj Productions.
