Belagavi: Jail department has started campaign literacy Program in 101 jails of the state to achieve literacy among prisoners.

The program, which started on Monday, has received a good response from the inmates who look like schools in jails. The prisoners are enthusiastically participating in the program and some are learning the alphabet very fast.
The department has identified hundreds of educated prisoners who have completed SSLC, PUC and graduation and assigned them to groups for teaching. Sessions are held in the barracks both day and night. Pencils and books are provided to the instructors and students for writing letters. Its purpose is to make them read and write before they leave the prison.
Hindalga Central Jail Chief Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar told TOI that the program is executed jointly with the adult education department. “It is now in its infancy and is currently attracting more prisoners to learn and teach. The trainers are given a decent remuneration by the government for their work. This program is being run in 101 jails of the state.
In Hindalga, there are more than 100 prisoners who have completed SSLC and 18 have completed BA. “We are looking at them as resources to get involved in the programme. If the plan continues as we expected, thousands of prisoners will become literate. We also have a community radio in the prison, and that is an added advantage to the programme,” he said.
