Prisoner escapes from Covid ward in Coimbatore hospital; cop gets second suspension in two months | Coimbatore News – Times of India

COIMBATORE: A constable attached to the armed reserve police was placed under suspension after a remand prisoner admitted to the covid ward of the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) escaped on Saturday.
The cop, identified as V Balaji, 29, a native of Cuddalore district, was suspended in November for ‘indecent behaviour’ and had rejoined duty 13 days ago, sources said.
Balaji was deployed on duty in the Covid ward after remand prisoner G Gajendran, 49, of Arisipalayam in Salem, was admitted there. “Gajendran managed to escape from the ward when the constable fell asleep on Saturday around 2am. Balaji came to know about the incident around 4.30am and alerted senior officers. Police personnel searched for the escapee at bus stands and railway stations in vain,” a police officer said.
After receiving a detailed report about the incident, deputy commissioner of police TV Muralidharan suspended Balaji on Saturday evening.
The Race Course police have formed two special teams to nab Gajendran. “He was arrested by the Coimbatore city police in July for setting fire to tires in front of Mahaliamman shrine at Five Corner, Vinayagar temple at Kottaimedu, Mappillai Vinayagar shrine in front of the Coimbatore railway station and Selva Vinayagar temple at Nallampalayam,” the officer added.
Balaji was suspended in November after videos showing a woman kissing him near Valankulam went viral on social media. He was in uniform.
