Principal arrested in Assam cash-for-result scam Guwahati News – Times of India

GUWAHATI: The headmaster of a school and an education department official were arrested on Sunday after the Assam Police unearthed a ‘cash-for-result’ scam.
Education boards are processing the final results of class X and twelfth state board students
The two persons arrested are Mazartop Higher Secondary School principal Akkas Ali and Inspector of Schools Office Data Operator Prashant Das,” said Kamrup Superintendent of Police Hitesh Roy said.
Those being questioned include Madhav Deka, the school inspector of Kamrup, who used to look after the affairs of secondary education in the district. Late on Sunday night, the government transferred Deka and posted him as Deputy Director of Secondary Education. Kamrup Elementary Education Officer Apoorva Thakuria has been temporarily given the charge of Inspector of Schools.
Special Secretary of Education Department Pritam Saikia has asked the Mission Director Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Abhi, Assam and the Director of Secondary Education to investigate the matter and take appropriate action against the officials involved in gross misconduct and dereliction of duty.
Though Kamrup police said that the raids at the office of Inspector of Schools (IS) were based on confidential information received by them, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government should be aware of such fraudulent methods done at the district level to change the result. There was information.
“It is unfortunate that the IS offices or they themselves are involved in the transfer of funds. The Inspectors (IS) of all the schools in the district are under investigation and strict action will be taken against any of them if they are found manipulating the results. We had inputs about such practices and action has been taken in Kamrup district,” Sarma said.
The two arrested persons are among the group of seven people brought for questioning by Kamrup police on Saturday. They were allegedly trying to manipulate the marks of the selected board examinees as per the evaluation formula adopted by the board. state education department.
Police sources said they have evidence that bribes were being taken to manipulate the results in Kamrup’s office, the inspector of schools. During raids at the office on Saturday, the police seized some documents, including the “table sheet” that had been submitted several times. “The discrepancies have been detected and a case has been registered at Changsari police station,” Roy said.
Roy said that Rs 2.18 lakh was recovered from Prashant’s possession, while another amount of Rs 17,050 was recovered from the office.
In the absence of a physical exam, school-based result sheets were sent to the board after verification at the inspectors’ offices. Assam will declare the results of both class X and XII board by the end of July. In the incident that has come to the fore in Kamrup, sources in the education department said that the attempt was mostly to influence the results of class X students.
As per the evaluation formula, 40 percent weightage has been given on the marks obtained in theory part of each subject in class IX for class X candidates. Another 40 per cent weightage has been given on the marks obtained in the theory part of each subject in the pre-board or revisionary test of class X conducted this year, while the remaining 20 per cent will come mainly from attendance, assignments and any other internal examination. this academic year. However, the government notification warns that the marks awarded to the board examinee should be commensurate with the marks obtained by the student in class IX. Schools were allowed to change up to 10 per cent for each school, looking at the overall results for the last three years.
However, the investigating officers said that unscrupulous elements are trying to tamper with this 10 per cent permissible limit. The variation up to 10 per cent was to be calculated taking into account the highest pass percentage obtained by the students of any one school in the last three years.
Officials said that the arrested principal submitted the mark list several times, which changed the marks of some students. “Some schools want to ensure that all their students pass through fake ones. For this they were trying to manipulate the marks from the district IS offices before they were sent to the education boards.”
