Princess Diana’s Ford Escort, gifted by Prince Charles, sold at auction for Rs 51 lakh

A Ford Escort car once owned by Diana, Princess of Wales, has been sold for £50,000. Compared to the price in US dollars, the car sold for $69,200, while in Indian rupees the car was sold for Rs 51.4 lakh. A South American museum bought this car through auction.

Lewis Rabbett of Riemann Dancy Auctions, where the car was sold, said that the car would see increased global interest once it was bought by the South American Museum.

The silver 1.6L Ghia saloon car was gifted to the Princess of Wales by Prince Charles two months before their wedding. The Grand Wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles took place in 1981 at St.’s Cathedral in London.

This car was first auctioned in 1982. An antique dealer bought this car for £6000. Subsequently, the car was bought by a telephone bidder for £52,640. The cost included sales tax and buyer’s premium.

This car still has a British number plate. Its number is WEV 297W. The car’s speedometer clock shows 133,575 km running.

Diana died in 1997 in a speeding car accident. She was driving the car at a very high speed in a long tunnel to avoid the photographers. Diana was only 36 years old at the time of her death.

Prince William and Prince Harry, sons of the late Princess Diana, will unveil a statue of her at their Kensington Palace Palace in London home on Thursday.
