Presidential Election: ‘Too Premature to Comment’, Says Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Opposition Discusses Possible Candidate

Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Wednesday said it was too early for him to comment on the possible choice of the opposition for the presidential election. was the unanimous opposition candidate for the post of Gandhi’s vice-president India In 2017 but lost to M Venkaiah Naidu in the election.

When asked about the presidential election race, Gandhi told news agency PTI, “It is too early to comment on it.”

According to agency sources, some opposition leaders discussed this with Gandhi over phone and urged him to consider his request to be a joint opposition candidate for the presidency. Sources further said that Gandhi has sought some time to respond to the requests of the leaders.

The 77-year-old former bureaucrat has also served as India’s High Commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka. He is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and C Rajagopalachari. Also on Wednesday the Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee Held a meeting with various opposition parties to consider the opposition’s choice of presidential candidate.

A few days back some leaders had proposed the name of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar, but he has refused to contest the elections.

Elections will be held on July 18 to elect Ramnath Kovind’s successor. Kovind had defeated joint opposition candidate Meira Kumar in the last presidential election.
