Premier League 2021-22: West Ham United make a stellar start to their season with a 4-2 win at Newcastle by coming from behind twice.

West Ham bounced back twice to start their Premier League season soaring with a 4-2 win over Newcastle in front of more than 50,000 fans at St James’s Park on Sunday. Buoyed by the Magpies’ first-capacity home crowd for 17 months, Newcastle got off to a great start as Callum Wilson led a teasing delivery from Alain Saint-Maximin. An intended cross by Aaron Cresswell quickly crept in to get West Ham level before Jacob Murphy’s header restored Newcastle’s lead at half-time. But David Moyes’ men showed why they finished sixth last season behind Tottenham and Arsenal after the break.
Newcastle could not keep up with the pace and invention of Saeed Benrahma and Michael Antonio.
They combined to get the visitors level once again in 53 minutes as Benrahma led home Antonio’s cross.
Antonio then hits the post with a header from point-blank range, but on the rebound, Murphy trips Pablo Fornals inside the box.
In his Premier League debut, Freddie Woodman saved Antonio’s penalty, but Tomas Sousek pushed for a rebound to keep West Ham in front.
Three minutes later Benrahma fed Antonio in a counter-attack and this time he made no mistake with a thumping finish to move level with Paolo Di Canio as West Ham’s all-time top goalscorer in the Premier League. .
